Wardrobe – A Poem by James LaMear 4

When I announced that I was leaving my job to become a writer, I was asked a question over and over again: “What will next week be like?”

Wardrobe is a poem inspired by that question.

Wardrobe

I write poems in my underwear
Since I don’t go out all day.
Though it gets chilly in December,
It’s very nice in May

I prefer pinstripes on Monday,
All business-like and pressed.
Then I wear golf clubs on Friday,
When my week is at its best.
Wardrobe

I have quite a wardrobe

But I have quite a wardrobe
Of which, to be sure, I’m proud.
I’ve one whole section of muted tones,
And another to store what’s loud.

Some shorts reminisce of Picasso:
Blocky shapes depicting a face.
The pieces, though disorganized,
Come together in that space.

Others follow Monet’s style,
With impressions of sunrise,
Lilly pads and bridged waterfronts,
Quite pleasing to the eyes.

I have a pair I quite enjoy
By Michelangelo,
With the entire Sistine Chapel
Draped beneath my torso.

But I also collect the whimsical
With cheap laughs to be had:
Calvin’s imaginary tiger
And Snoopy make me glad.

There’s a tomcat and a tweety bird
Chasing round and round,
And a bunny gone to Albuquerque
By tunneling underground.

Then there’s my collection of random prints
To inspire on rainy days.
Some have tulips or sunflowers
Following the sun’s bright rays.

Some have little duckies,
And some have steins and mugs.
Some have little Cupids with
XOs for kisses and hugs.

Wardrobe

I’ve taken to wearing a robe

With so many options to spoil my choice
Each day’s it’s own delight.
Inspiration comes throughout the day
And continues through the night.

When I must go out during the week
I’ve taken to wearing a robe,
As my kind neighbors have let me know
Their distress with my wardrobe.

But generally, I must say,
I’m quite happy to stay sat
Typing away all the day,
And prefer to do just that.

Weekends with the wife are tiresome:
To dress takes half the day;
But I can’t wait till Monday morn
When I can dress my way!
