Wild Pathways at Starved Rock State Park

Wild Pathways

 Wild Pathways

Wild pathways, ages unused,
Guide footsteps new and unknowing
Of those who came before to seek
Wisdom in silent solitude, among oaks
So old as to make grandsires seem new.

Craggy steps, paths in stone
Fall away to rooted fingers digging through
Crushing mountains bit by bit to,
One day, nothing but sandy shores
In a world remade by time

But in these steps, yet unworn by ages,
I find the peace of ceaseless ages rests
The ancient wisdom whispers through the boughs
Of man’s endless search to know
And understand what is not he.

In fore score years he withers and dies
Beginning to shrink from his height in two.
Yet the oak, in continuing pursuit
Of sunny skies at the forest’s roof
Will see his grandchildren walk by.

And perhaps on that day
This weary searchers spirit
Will join the travelers that came before
And whisper with them through the trees
The wisdom that was unattainable in this life.
